Re: GTV6 cooling solved (GTV6 cooling enigma follow up)
That's very interesting. Did you call IAP and tell them That their fans
were wired backwards? They would be very interested to know that, I'm
sure. I am also surprised that the fans don't include the shroud. On
many GTV-6 fans (like the ones which came on my '86) the motors are not
separate from the shroud (housing), but actually part of it -I.E. the
fan housing is also the case for the motor, and you cannot really take
the motor off of the shroud. I wonder how IAP handles those fans?
At any rate, I found what I think is a better solution - a Milano (75)
fan. When I had a 3.0 liter V-6 installed in my GTV-6, earlier this
year, I found that the passenger-side fan was running slowly and
drawing tons of current. I looked in all the usual places for a new one
(IAP's new catalogue, listing replacement GTV-6 fans for the first
time, had not arrived) Alfa Parts didn't have any, neither did AR
Ricambi. APE told me that GTV-6 fans went out the door as fast as they
came in. OTOH, I was told, Milano fans didn't sell at all (which
obviously meant that they never failed[?]) and those were available.
Well, I got one and we cobbled together (not difficult, really) a
bracket out of some flat stock which picked up the four inboard
mounting holes on the radiator for the two original fans. I find that
the single Milano fan actually pulls more air than did the two GTV-6
fans, and since they seem reliable (APE said they never had any any
call for the Milano fans, unlike the GTV-6 puppies), this appears to be
the way to go with this particular problem.

Anyway, Josh, I'm glad you solved your cooling problem

Subject: GTV6 cooling solved (GTV6 cooling enigma follow up)
First, let me thank everyone for their suggestions. A friend of mine
ultimately solved my problem this Saturday. It did turn out to be the
IAP fans,
although not with their functionality. They were mounted correctly,
but it turns out
that the preinstalled electrical connectors had the polarity reversed.
The
connectors can only be plugged in one way so I didn't suspect that
they might be
wired "backwards" from the vendor. This merely teaches me (again!)
that one
must not rule out anything when troubleshooting a problem. A simple
test to
actually check fan flow direction (instead of trusting the hot air on
one's hand)
is to use a piece of paper. Simply stick it down near the fans when
they're
on, and it should be pushed away from it. If it's sucked towards it,
then you
have a problem. So if anyone else wants to use the IAP OEM style fans
for the
GTV6, they have my functional approval, although I didn't care for the
mounting
setup (reuse the stock housings if you are able to). Just make sure to
actually test the airflow direction. It is a relatively simple
procedure to use a
small flat blade screwdriver to remove the electrical connectors from
the
plastic housing and reverse them if the flow is incorrect. Make
certain to push the
metal tang back out on the connectors with the screwdriver so that
they will
stay put when you reinstall them back into the plastic housing.
Although it
seems obvious now, I didn't think about the simple paper flow test.
Hopefully my
embarassment will save someone else some grief down the road. Thanks
again to
all those who responded with suggestions.
