Another Di-electric Grease question

Question on the application of di-electric grease. Are you supposed to
put it all over the connectors or just around the outside of a connected
pair?  The stuff I have (Permatex) says to maintain metal to metal
contact.
 
Now that my speedo has been working again for the last few hundred miles
after the vigorous wire brush treatment I don't want to have to keep
redoing it...
