Seat belts

Apparently none of you use either Google or Yahoo.

Plug in Alfa spider seat belts, Alfa diagonal seat belts, Alfa seat
belts, and except for the two sponsored ads, AlfaCyberSite.com is number
one - ready and waiting to serve your Series 1 thru 3 Spider's diagonal
seat belt needs.

Short of building two great lumps of metal on the floor behind the seats
and using the ungainly seat belt guides which the Series 4 Spiders
utilize, virtually any diagonal seat belt in 'our' Spiders will be a
slight compromise.

After being asked to install diagonal seat belts in a Series 2 Spider
which I was restoring for a client I felt other's might benefit from my
R & D. I have since offered them on my website.

I'll admit I've had a few complaints and have done my best to alleviate
the problems - as much as possible. The biggest problem is if you are
very tall and / or high waisted. Shorter driver's and passengers
generally have no problems.

Yes, I too use Securon diagonal seat belts. Being me, I have emailed
Securon three times suggesting (okay strongly suggesting) some quite
simple modifications to their 'system'. The best answer I've received
was something like 'we'll take your comments under advisement'. I
decided not to hold my breath for long.

Still, they're quality belts. The detailed instructions I supply suggest
installing the reel in a different location. Hardware is included for
this modification. Additionally a small but important modification is
made to each reel to help insure the belt retracts smoothly without
binding. New, black seat belt guides (which are sourced from one of the
Digest's advertisers) along with stainless sheet metal screws are also
included.

While slightly more expensive than 'elsewhere' I feel it is more of a
complete package. If you don't try to rush things, the belts pull out
and retract smoothly (even with the top down), and are easily accessible
because of the seat belt guide retaining the 'tongue' / male latch.

Oh yes: When I first offered the belts all I could find were ones with
30 cm stalks. Shortly after the client took delivery of his
semi-restored '73 Spider he asked if I could find shorter stalks. His
wife is very short and the (almost 10") stalk was even with her ribs (or
higher). It was obviously a dangerous situation with the attachment
point that high. I sourced a pair of 15 cm stalks from my friendly
supplier and they work much better - except they are solid whereas the
longer ones were on a flexible cable. They work fine on the driver's
side, but there is some interference on the narrower passenger side when
moving the seatback forward or moving the seat to and fro. One of my
several suggestions to Securon was to offer 20 cm flexible stalks.
Again, I'm not holding my breath.

I hate to be the bearer / forecaster of bad news, but trading 30+ year
old seat belts for 30+ year old diagonal seat belts will get you
something to hang on your shoulder, but suspect not much more than that.
Also, attaching the reel to the stock rear mounting point is virtually
worthless unless one never lowers their top.
