Stepping out in my 164

I brought my 164S into the gas station today to have them check out the
lack of cold air. When I called up to find out the status of his
exploration I was told they had recharged the system (quite a bit of R-12
freon or whatever it is these days) and it was ready to go. However, he
added quite ominously that he had to "knock the fan motor to get blow
inside". I assume he wasn't referring to coke. Well, on my way home the
air was cool as could be. But, I also started hearing a little bit of a
clicking sound which I understand it not good news when it comes to the
stepper motor. I stopped on my way home and started it up another hour
or so later for a short trip home. No noise. Should I assume the worse
and expect I'll need one of these motors? What is involved? I've got a
great Alfa mechanic near where I live but he didn't want to both with
checking out the AC when I dropped it off. Is this a pain in the neck
kind of job? What should I expect to pay for replacing the motor. I
hope I'm not putting the horse in front of the cart but just trying to
anticipate all possibilities. All advice is welcome.
