Spider's Tweety Bird

Friends,
My 93 Spider has developed a consistent sound coming from the front of the
engine.
Best way to explain it is that it sounds like a high pitched squeal similar
to a loose belt or loose timing chain.
It increases with RPM's and the sounds is amplified if you ride along side a
hard surface (guard rail, building wall, etc.)
It disappears with the clutch in and a drop to idle.

One question: Can the timing chain become loose but remain in place?
Or ... could it be the water pump bearing or similar?

No loss of engine power, etc. and while the alternator belt is new, it is
distinctively not a belt-squeal noise.
Yes ... the noise started with the replacement of the alternator belt.
Coincidence?

Any help would be appreciated.
