Use them as is.
The hole down the middle is part of the seal.
I am unaware of any spec for the amount of seal that's 
supposed to remain above the journal, though one probably exists.
If you can get access to the factory tool for installation of these seals 
use it - makes life ahelluvalot easier. If you can't then try to make one up.
Freeze them overnight - again makes install easier.
Follow the factory workshop manual and you'll do OK.
DON'T USE RTV around them - unecessary!!!!!!
And you don't want any of that getting into the engine lubrication system.
