For a better understanding of how wire wheels work (at least bicycle one) see
the book "The Bicycle Wheel" by Jobst Brandt, it has a wealth of info on how
and why the wheels work including the fact that the bottom spokes hold the
wheel up (not the top ones) due to a decrease in their tension which is
non-zero even when fully loaded (sort of reverse compression as compared to
wooden spoked wheels).
