many of you talked about tightening the nuts.

my problem, though, which wasn't addressed, is getting the new #$$@!!@#!
stud in to place. i must not have made myself very clear in the initial
posting.

the correct solution appears to be removing the 1-4 exhaust manifold
section entirely in order to provide adequate access to thread in the new
stud.
