alfetta transmission woes

hello fellow alfisti--

my '79 alfetta transmission has had a crisis...

i heard--and felt--a clunk, and now second gear just isn't there any more.

what could be the cause of this? i'm ready to pull the transmission for r&r,
but i'd like to know what i'm looking for and what is likely to be needed in
terms of parts, etc.
