in private email, Don Daegrigg suggested simultaneous, coincidental
failures. i disconnected all the affected switches, hosed the connections
down with contact cleaner, and got the door switches in back and the front
window switches to work. the rear window switches in the center console
have returned to "flakey", which is consistent with the way they've been
since i've owned the car.
i also found that switches for positioning the driver seat had gone
partially inoperative, but more contact cleaner treatment brought those
back.
