Re: Trailing Arm Bolts

From the McMaster-Carr site: (www.mcmastercarr.com)
appearing on page 2961, is a bit on the various steel types and grades, and how they compare. I left out a load of ASTM classes to keep it (almost) short..

Grades seem to be US style, classes are used on Metric hardware?

Since we're talking about a critical application, i.e. suspensions, I'd do more research, rather than just depend on this info.

So far, all the hardware I'm finding in my front suspension are 8.8 class.

About Nut Grades and Classes

Grade 2 Made from C1006-C1022, C1215, 12L13, or 12L14 steel. For use in low-strength applications. Minimum Rockwell hardness: B49. Minimum tensile strength: 44,225 psi.

Grade 5 Made from steels such as C1008-C1026. For use in medium-strength applications. Rockwell hardness: C25. Minimum tensile strength: 120,000 psi.

Grade 8 Made from alloy steels such as C1021-C1045. For use with Grade 8 screws in high-strength applications, as well as with ASTM A325 screws.
Minimum Rockwell hardness: C24. Minimum tensile strength: 150,000 psi.

Grade 9 Made of C1033, C1035, or C1045 steel that has been quenched and tempered for greater strength. Tensile strength of 180,000 psi, which is 20% higher than the standard for Grade 8 nuts. Minimum Rockwell hardness is C28.

Class 4/5.8 Comparable to Grade 2. Minimum Rockwell hardness: B71. Minimum tensile strength: 60,900 psi.

Class 6 Comparable to Grade 2. Minimum Rockwell hardness: B89. Minimum tensile strength: 87,000 psi.

Class 8/8.8 Comparable to Grade 5. Minimum Rockwell hardness: C20. Minimum tensile strength: 116,000 psi.

Class 10 Comparable to Grade 8. Minimum Rockwell hardness: C32. Minimum tensile strength: 150,800 psi.

Class 12 Exceeds Grade 8 high-strength steel and is the highest metric strength class. Made from alloy steels C1035 and C1045. Minimum Rockwell hardness: C39. Minimum tensile strength: 176,900 psi.
