Well...exactly that, your valves bang into your pistons and get bent.
It's ugly. Your timing belt is responsible for keeping your pistons and
valves all moving in a delicate dance, if your timing belt goes or
jumps/skips then your valves and pistons loose that sync and start
cracking into each other. The force generated generally bends at least a
couple valves. You have no choice but to replace the bent valves (might
as well do 'em all why you are in there) and valve guides. 

As to what caused the timing belt to slip/jump/skip...that's another
question but something you'll want to diagnose.
