Ahh, delightfully, the wire going down the steering column does indeed
connect to a shorter wire leading to the switch mechanism right under the
center cover on the wheel.  It ended up being a trivial task to crimp a
new connector onto the column wire and seal everything with some
heatshrink tubing.
