That's the way the older engines were designed, according to Castrol's literature on lubrication. They counted on the CRAP to maintain a good oil seal. Synthetic oils and modern multi-weights with their aggressive detergents wash away the crap (which is out of harm's way if not disturbed), and the engine's leak.
