Autocrossing

Tim Timko said -

"I remember a abuddy of mine telling me of a guy that brought a slightly
modified Yugo to an AutoCross. The Corvette owners were laughing at him when
he drove in....But they were crying when he left...WITH 1st PLACE!!!"

Autocrosses and gymkhanas in smallish venues are good levellers. The biggest
parking lot our sports car club up in Anchorage could get was at a bowling alley,
and covered maybe one acre. On one Sunday, FTD was a tie between a very
precisely-driven Corvette and a Renault 4CV. The Renault's driver just put the
car in 2nd gear, kept his right foot buried, and steered... A similar situation
occurred one year during the midwinter Fur Rendezvous street races, when (again)
a Corvette and a go-kart shared the alltime lap record.

Wandering sort of off the subject (for a change, right), the widely-maligned Yugo
was a car in which I saw some potential. That was because it was essentially just
a shortened Fiat 128, a favorite car of mine - I had envisioned setting up a
business doing cosmetic and performance modifications to the Balkan baby, to be
known as "Yugo Your Way," but then that war intervened. That and reality...
