Alternator Replacement - Milano

I had to tow the Milano home last night. The alternator finally gave out and
the battery was drained. I have been told that I could just replace the
brushes in the alternator and not the whole unit, is this true? If so where
can i get the brushes? 
 
Are the whole alternator units expensive? I would rather just replace the
whole thing if was a resonable price.
