E-Brake Repair ... where's the spring ? (74 Spider)

Cats,

My e-brake handle does NOT stay up  ....  the e-brake works when I keep it 
tugged but the spring inside I believe is defective/worn out (it slightly 
"ratchets" when I pull it but the tooth groove does not seat)

where IS the spring that acts on the button at the end of the handle ?
