RE: Liner Removal

The only way that I have found to remove stuck liners without damaging them,
is with the proper Alfa tool, or a facsimile of one.

Basically a piece that is approx. 1 - 2" wide that is the OD of the liner
with a relief that fits the ID. There is a threaded hole in the middle.

I've had a local tool and die shop make me some in various sizes for 1600s
and 2000s. It helps if you have an old sleeve you can give them for the
size.

You place the slug under the sleeve, screw a long threaded rod into it, and
place a plate over the head studs and extract the sleeve(s).

Technically, the sleeves just drop into the block with little interference,
so they should come out pretty easily, but I've experienced everything from
ones that just pull right out to ones that are really stuck and you really
have to crank on the tool to get them out.

If they are not too stuck, you might be able to tap them out with a piece of
wood if the crank is out. You could try a brass drift also, but you run the
risk of buggering the bottom of the sleeve.

Subject: Liner Removal

OK, so here's my first concern in the rebuild of the Alfetta engine - how is

the shop supposed to remove the liners from the block? My previous (but
limited) experience tells me the liners are fairly loose unless corroded or
glued in. That is, once the head is off, of course.

I went to see the work in progress and it seems they haven't removed the
liners from the block yet. When I tried moving the liners with my fingers,
they seemed pretty stuck in place.

Can the collective wisdom of the AD tell me:

a) Are they supposed to be stuck tight in the block?

and

b) How best to remove them if they are stuck?

Remember, we want to reuse these as the crosshatch and measures are all
pristine.

TIA,

Tom
