I couldn't agree with this sentiment more. If you're ham-fisted, you can
destroy even fresh Alfa synchros in a matter of months, so it's best to
learn how to shift in a way that's easy on them. Then, down the road,
replace the synchro and it'll last forever.
Upshift nice and easy from first to second - taking a half second or so for
the revs to drop a bit before engaging second - or perhaps double clutch the
upshift if you prefer. On the downshifts, match revs with a "heel and toe"
and you're all set.
