Fwiw, I got burned in a similar manner a couple of years ago, also paid
with a postal money order.

Interestingly, that makes it a federal crime.  A bunch of us who had
gotten burned by the same guy got together, got the FBI and the local
police involved, they guy went to jail for a while and is now sending me
small checks every month..
