Will,

the Beetle has it's battery under the seat but was originally protected by a
shield (a felt pad IIRC). Most of which are long since lost.

 I'd hardly use the humble Beetle as an abject lesson in automotive design
safety, it has the fuel tank situated about where your lap is !!!!
