Kramer,

Your input shaft bearing has had the plastic spacer for the rollers
disintegrate. Pretty common and replaced with an upgraded bearing. We
disassemble the transaxle in situ in order to avoid pulling the bell housing
and replace it from the inside of the case. We've done dozens over the
years. It can make noise for a long time, but be careful with aggressive
throttle. With the bearing rollers not spaced equidistantly, the input shaft
is forced away from the other gear set center line and puts a great deal of
stress on the edges of the teeth.
