fluid for '91-'93 164L 5-speed tranny

hi all,

i recently had the input shaft bearing replaced in my '92 164L transmission.  this past thanksgiving, cruising from fredneck, md to old saybrook ct, the car was fine, as long as i was cruising at ~84mph or less.  anyting higher, & the trans would pop out of 5th gear.  also, strange burnt-oil smell.  when i returned home, i asked my mechanic what fluid he used when doing the tranny work, & he said he yust used regular 80w90.  looking in the manual, it calls for agip dexron ll, which is an a/t fluid.  is this the correct fluid?  anyting better i could use?  could the 80w90 be the cause of the popping outta 5th gear when cruising at hi-speed?  any long-term damage possible here?
