I think they missed being first by a bit. That SOHC Pontiac engine we've been nattering on about was on the road in 1965, and I believe the big news about it was its use of a Gilmer belt to drive the camshaft. That, plus the fact that this was the first OHC engine in a post-WW2 American car...NOT!
