Rotor Problem

Here is my take on it...for what its worth

Between the center and the tip is a resistance material to help prolong
distributor cap life. It cuts down the voltage of the spark.

This erodes away over time as you have seen until the car won't start or the
ignition system jumps the gap and keeps on running.

This problem surfaced in the 1970's. The cure was to go to the solid metal
contact rotor.
