It is at first a little surprising to find the pump won't move past the studs when all the nuts are off... the 3 or 4 times I've done it (on different cars) it's been quickest by far (and so easy) to pull a couple of studs. Mostly they seem to have been out before and undo without protesting. The "double-nut method" has always worked for me on the studs in question - but be sensitive to mechanical limits when tightening up!

Save yourself the hassle of having to buy a special socket for the pulley nut.
