Washer Motor
The resurrection of the '84 GTV6 is nearly complete and I'm now down to
trying to fix the little annoying things. Since I had to take the hood
insulation pad off so the body guys could "iron out" the hail dents, I
decided it would be a good time to re-plumb the windshield washer hoses.
The old ones were brittle and cracked in several spots. Being
unusually clever at the time I decided to see if the thing would
actually squirt water before I actually did the plumbing. No.
Inspection showed that the electric connector on the pump had been
knocked nearly off the pump and was just hanging loose. It is broken
where it is not supposed to be broken - as in, the internal electric
contacts are no longer internal. I don't see any way to fix it.
(Finally, the question.) Are replacements, new or good used, available
anywhere?
Door latch
Then there is the driver's side door latch. It works fine 60 or 70% of
the time but then seems to take spells where it won't latch tightly. It
latches in what we used to call the "safety position," not fully closed.
During these spells if I try to close the door sharply it won't latch
at all and just bounces back open. These spells once they start seem to
last for a day or two then it will be right for another few days. I
remember this problem having occurred in the past, before the car was
taken off the road six or seven years ago but it was fine all summer
long while I was working on the car. It didn't reappear till after I
put the door panels back on after the new paint job was done. That led
me to conclude that the door panel was interfering somewhere. No such
luck. Yesterday I took the panel off again and with the panel off it
still could be made to behave badly. I could not see anything in the
connections that looked to be a problem. Puzzled, I just sprayed
everything with a silicone lube and put it back together. It seems
marginally better but it is probably too soon to know. I'm now
wondering if the problem could be weather related, like worse when it
gets cold. Any hints as to what I should be looking for here?
Rear brake update
Relating to an older post about my problem with the non functioning rear
caliper adjuster, I tried the advice of pushing back on the pad while
turning the adjuster to try to get it to re-thread itself.
Unsuccessfully. So at that point I decided to replace the caliper.
Might as well do both, and the disks, at the same time. Before
ordering the parts I tried to undo the disk bolts just to see if I could
get them to break loose. No way. Not with my available tools, and on
my back (no lift). So I took the car to my local import shop (a Volvo
specialist - can't find a proper Alfa shop in Indianapolis) for an
estimate. $525. OK, order the parts and when they get here call me.
That was two weeks ago. I guess I need to call them and help them find
the parts. Just venting here.
