You may be in luck. "Rudimentary" skills should be enough for this one.
Your suspicions about this being a fuel problem are right on. I believe you
have a fuel pump fuse problem. Either blown or lost contact.
Visually inspecting the fuse won't be enough. You 'll need to pull the fuse
out, clean the contacts in the fuse holder and the tips of the fuse with Alfa
Tool Number one (pencil eraser).
I had this same thing happen with my late lamented 1984 GTV6. I didn't think
of the fuse until a guy in a GTI VW Rabbit pulled up and offered to help me
out.
