1600 Engine won't start

I have a 1969 Spider with a 1600 engine with a two barrel Weber carb.  I 
replaced the head gasket which was bad.  After reassemble of the engine I 
have not been able to get the engine to start.  Engine backfires through the 
carb.  Seems to be a timing issue.  Also this engine has only one timing mark 
on the engine pulley, TDC I think.  Anyone have any suggestions to the 
problem.  Also I need the lower clutch cover for the drive train.
