Steering wheel puller
A word of personal thanks to Mike Nakamura for his reasonably restrained
rejection of dogmatic absolutes and consequent incivility on the whole
rats-nest of steering-wheel, puller, thread stripping, etcetera issues.
I would just like to add that many design decisions on splines, tapers, keys,
pullers, threads, and a host of other questions are predicated on reasonable
anticipations of normal service life and conditions (how hard is it going to
be for a trained service rep with factory tools to pull a steering wheel on a
two or three year old car?) and many problems arise when well-meaning and
often relatively inexperienced, albeit intelligent, people with necessarily
makeshift equipment approach an unfamiliar problem for the first time on a car
which is thirty, forty, or fifty years old. Patience, sensitivity, even
humility, and thought will often help but may, in the end, fail. Not just
talking about steering wheels, either. Is it worth it? People who drive newish
Camrys don't have these problems. The problems, frustrating as they are, are
the lesser evil for some.
Enjoy, or at least try to -
