One tidbit related to this thread is that newish steering columns (mid 60's on) generally have shear pins or collapsible sections. Pounding on the end of the column, directly or indirectly, is not recommended for steering wheels attached to these types of steering columns, expensive damage can easily be done. Airbag equipped wheels are another whole topic.
