The owner's manual of my 164S (all of which came with a manual transmission)
shows the dipstick on the left side of the transmission, toward the back. I
checked from above and it was not immediately visible...don't know if a wrong
picture got into the manual or if I should have checked better. Probably the
latter.

The 164 would not be the only manual transmission car to come with a
transmission dipstick. I guess some gearbox locations make a dipstick
impractical, but I can think of at least one other vehicle with a transmission
dipstick, the Subaru Legacy.
