RE: 164 5speed input shaft bearing



Curtiss,

I have gone through the efforts associated with changing the input shaft
bearing on my 91 164 transmission. The original bearing employed a plastic
retainer that separated the ball bearings which included only 6 or so balls.
The replacement bearing is a roller type and has no plastic retainer. I'm not
absolutely sure but I think you can tell the bearings apart by looking at the
bearing inside the bell housing. In my case I only found the ball bearings
since the plastic retainer has self destructed. To replace the bearing you
must remove the entire set of gears, element by element, and then reinstall
them. I found this to be a very difficult and tedious task and, due to concern
over the integrity of the final product, ended up giving the unit to a
professional. The reassembled tanny has been working fine ever since.
