I recently went through this when assembling my driveshaft (which had laid
in the cabinet in parts for over 4 years). Looking in the Haynes manual that
I have you can clearly see in the pictures that the bolts alternate
direction. However in the assembly drawing you can clearly see that all of
the boltheads are forward. In the Parts diagram book that I have it only
depicts one bolt with the head forward. I had to crawl under the car cause I
couldn't remember what I had finally decided on and found that I installed
mine with all of the bolt heads forward. I recall now using the old standard
of "when in doubt, bolt heads go up, forward or inboard" but in reality,
unless there is some clearance or access issue involved, I don't think it's
going to matter much. I also used all new lock nuts, which is recommended as
nylocks are not designed to be reused.
