California Contact Cement
Once again sending this to both the Alfa Digest and 750-101 Group.
Must admit I was rather taken back by the response. Thank you all for
your comments and suggestions: David Khoe, Doug Depperman, Ron Ewing,
Verena Ragazza, Jeff, and especially Tony Sims, Mitch Wolberg, Caxambu,
and Dick Bevins who have offered to ship 'the real stuff'. Should I ask
for you to do so, perhaps you could label it: For Medical Purposes Only.
Slightly more research on the subject: I'm surmising by the sign on the
wall at Lindsey & Hall, a large auto upholstery warehouse located in So.
El Monte, CA it truly is a problem. The notice used the name of South
coast Air Management. It in essence said that their customers should
write their elected officials and rescind a particular law (didn't write
it down) in order to give the manufacturers more time to come up with a
good substitute to the flammable type contact cement.
And, no, L & H cannot carry it in quarts, etc. either. However...when I
asked the counter guy if they had any of the good old highly flammable
stuff in spray cans, he dug around and pulled out a 16 oz. can of DAP's
good stuff. I bought three cans. Suspect, it might have somehow missed
being removed from the shelves, or for whatever reason, the concern is
only over contact cement in non-aerosol cans (????).
So it appears to be a So. Cal. 'issue'...for now. Bet those of you in
say, GB, never thought you'd ever be using unleaded fuel, just because
those Crazy Californians had mandated itnot to mention those in the
rest of the U.S.
I'm not trying to make a political statement here, just pointing out
what few facts I have on the subject.
I like using contact cement, especially when installing canvas tops. The
first canvas top I installed I tested some of the canvas by really
soaking it with contact cement to see if it would bleed through. It
didn't and I put on two coats with a brush. The first one really soaks
in to the material.
I also use it when wrapping the pieces which retain the top to the bows
after the main top is installed and attached to the windshield header. I
really hate this part since one is almost standing on their head, must
put a myriad of papers down to catch any drips, and try really hard not
to get one tiny bit of 'extra' glue on the inside of the canvas. For
that reason it won't be a good idea to use the aerosol contact cement
here.
Maybe they could make the new / improved glue in matte black.
Thanks again, all,
Biba
