How to sync carbs (was : Mercury substitute)

Thanks to John and to all having answered to my question, also for the answers
I receive off and
on-line. The situation seams to be : go and buy a synchro like UNI-SYN
and forget about mercury system even if it comes from Alfa Romeo.

One of the good point with Alfa sync is the fact you can see all 4 tubes in
the same
time and you just take care about adjusting the carb's. With UNI-SYN (or
any
system like that one) you should work on each carb one at a time, then go
back
to recheck and so on until all 4 are synchronized.

When I was reading your suggestions, I continue to search information on how
to sync carb's. I found 2 ways to measure the depression. First one is the
absolute where you need mercury due to his properties and a second one
relative where you can use other liquid like oil or even water. With the
second one, you just measure the differences between each carb and it should
work unless you have a big difference. As the last one is cheap, I'll build
that system this week-end and tell you about my result.

BTW, I found a source for mercury but very expensive = 200 $ (+ 21% VAT) for 1
kg and I need at least 200cc (1L is 13.6 kg so less than 100cc for 1 kg)

Have a nice week-end,
Yvon
