the wood is two halves sandwiched over a metal
ring. the split that you have is the two halves
de-laminating down the glue seam. i tried using
wood filler, but the split kept slowly growing and
the filler came loose.
by about two years ago, there were splits and
cracks everywhere, not just at the seam. the cost
of a replacement new wheel through Re-Originals
was $1400, so i decided to tackle refinishing it
myself from square one. what a HUGE project
that was !
if you can squeeze the seam back together, try
using 2 ton epoxy available from your local hardware
store. mix and apply sparingly down the crack
using something thin like a razor blade to spread
it inside. you should have about an hour of working
time, unless it is really hot out. clamp the wood
together using good wood clamps and protect
the wheel from dents with soft wood or rubber.
carefully wipe off any epoxy that squeezes out.
let cure at least 24 hours or whatever the instructions
on the epoxy says.
anyone else on the digest have better ideas ?
