John,
Quite often the model year on the California paperwork is the model year when the car was sold. More than likely the car was sold in very late 1973 or early 1974. The dealer fills out the paperwork that is submitted to the DMV and he probably put in 1974 as the model year. If the car were still in California this could be significant since 1973
and earlier cars are exempt from the bi-annual smog check.
