Bruce,

Not knowing exactly what was wrong with the car, there are two easily mixed 
up items that you should check.

Is the timing of the pump correct?  It needs to be 80 deg before TDC on the 
firing stroke, easy to get 180 deg out of phase.

The timing (which you already mentioned.)

The fuel cutoff solenoid should work reasonably well at about 9-10 turns in 
from when you removed it.  Then you can fine tune from there.
