Had a Volkswagen Fox which made similar noises until it belched big ball
bearings all over the Bell Helicopter Textron parking lot in Hurst, TX (I
still have some of the bearings in a jar I keep on my desk.) I ended up
replacing both joints there in the parking lot which is not the optimal
location.

Rebuilt joints including shafts are usually readily available at reasonable
cost. And in many cars they're not to bad to replace. I did the job in about
an hour in the parking lot. Don't put this job off...they can break any
time, anywhere and leave you stranded. Better to take care of this in a
controlled environment on your own time and terms.
