milano clutch replacement woes

hey folks,
i'm in the middle of swapping the clutch on my '87
milano gold. everything is smooth as silk, except for
the roll pin in the shifter linkage. i am having quite
a bit of difficulty here - i don't think the thing has
moved at all since i started tapping on it. though it
does appear to be mushrooming a bit.

does anyone have any tips on getting this out? i'm a
bit puzzled: i can't swing the hammer too hard due to
space problems, and if i could what damage am i
possibly causing the transmission?

should i just pull the whole transaxle so i can get at
it better?

thanks,
