Re: power window screech
Mike,
You're going to have to remove the door panel to determine what's wrong.
Either the cable is getting twisted on the regulator or some of the cable
attachment points on the window are coming loose. Once you have the panel off,
you'll be able to figure out what's wrong. Do it now while things aren't
broken. It might not take any new parts. If you wait for it to break, then new
parts will be required (ask me how I know!)
A few words of advice:
1) When taking the panel off, don't be too forceful. Use a plastic
spatula to do the prying gently. It's easy to break the pressed board backing.
Keep track of all the fasteners and replace the broken ones. The pin-in-plastic
grommet affair at the upper rear is a real bear! Check to make sure you have
all the screws out. No you didn't get them all out! You forgot the one behind
the red reflector. Don't miss the one buried under the map pocket! There are
two, not one, screws in the door pull/armrest!
2) Keep the plastic backing sheet intact or replace with a new one.
This prevents water from destroying the pressed board backing.
3) If you decide to disassemble the cable, take careful notes and
drawings of how it wraps around the various pulleys and what direction it is
going in.
4) After you have fixed things, leave the panel off for a few days just
in case things get out of adjustment.
I believe the motor can be used on either side. I think the regulator
is specific to right or left. At any rate, take the panel off and see what's
wrong. You can still drive the car while you're waiting for the right part. I
did for >6 months! Then I forgot how things went back together and had to
remove the passenger side panel just to figure it out. Gesh!
Good Luck,
Charlie
'89 Spider too!
