Re: Duetto/Kamm Spider differences, parts wanted

Val,

The '71 and later Spider body has an indentation below the nose edge for the
top of the (different profile) grille to fit under. If you put a newer nose
on a Duetto, the old grille won't fit the new sheet metal profile, since it
doesn't have the bump on top of the nose. In other words, the grille will
have to match the bodywork. The biggest issue will be bumpers and mounts.
The '71 - '74 cars have relatively light bumpers and mounts, and these
mounts might interchange with Duetto bumpers. Duetto (or '71-'74 bumpers)
are definitely not interchangeable with a '76 and later. These cars have
bumper shock absorbers and heavy mounts on different centerlines than the
bolt patterns on earlier cars. Interestingly, the later cars still have the
indentation under the nose even when they have the false "half grilles" and
a full width black bumper. If you cut and retract a '76 bumper, a real '72
grille can be mounted in the resulting opening. I did this on my '76 and it
makes the thing look like a real Spider (See the Dec. Alfa Owner, page 8).
Be warned, though, these bumpers weigh 75-80 lbs. each and there is a lot of
steel to cut through after you get through the thin outer layer of rubber.
