I have had this identical problem on several cars, including a Jag XJ6, 
an Alfa Spica-equipped Spider, a Fiat 124 and a Lancia Beta. In each 
case it turned out to be the fuel filter. In the Alfa the diagnosis was 
easy because the fuel pressure light came on.
