Temperature readouts on 164s

Has anybody had any experience in restoring the illumination on the HVAC 
temperature and external temperature readouts on a 1991 164?  Both of those 
items are working on my car, that is in the right light you can read the 
number being displayed, but the background lighting that makes them easily 
readable has gone away on both readouts.  I have had the electronic conrol 
unit out and inspected the insides but I have no clue as to how to fix the 
problem.  Failing a home garage fix, does anyone have a contact in the San 
Francisco Bay Area (or elsewhere, for that matter) who can repair this 
problem?
