hardtop hardware for '86 spider

I attempted to install the hardtop on my '86 spider quad a couple weeks ago.
It went on with some difficulty and I couldn't get both J-hooks on
simultaneously.  I got the hardtop and mounting hardware separately, so I'm
not sure if I've got all the right parts.  
 
I have two J-hooks (with two nuts each...no spacers - are the spacers
necessary?) and two angled brackets.
 
My questions:
 
Is the mounting hardware the same for all spiders of all years?  If not,
what are the differences?  If someone with an '86 could send me a quick
digital pic of their hardware, that would be extra credit!
 
I got the back brackets on, but they don't match the pics in the manual.
Mine are angled the opposite way from the picture in the factory manual.
 
Do the j-hooks go into the top before the top is lowered onto the car or
after?  Should they be facing in or out?
 
Thanks for the help.  It didn't look that difficult when I started, but
after about 20 minutes I was scratching my head pretty good.
