Mysterious numbers (was: Re: Mysterious Giulia)
Gert-Jan from Holland gave a detailed response to the query of Olivier Brose
from Belgium about AR2424170, including a production date of 1971, a type
designation of 2000 GT Veloce -type 105.21 (rather than GTV2000, which Olivier
Brose had called it) and that in that year the serial number range produced
was 105.21.2420001-105.21.2426702 with corresponding engine serial numbers
00512.00001-00512.10226. He goes on to say "This model was produced from
1970-1977 in total 37459 pcs".
The distinction between a GT Veloce and a GTV, and especially between a 2000
GTV and a GTV 2000, has been mentioned in the past (Les? Somebody from down
that way, if memory serves) as the Alfetta coupe was called a GTV 2000 (but
not called a Veloce), which could occasionally lead to confusion. The serial
numbers which Gert-Jan gave are exactly those given for the 1971 105.21 by
Fusi.
Fusi's production figures stop with the 1972 cars. D'Amico & Tabucchi, who
are a later and larger but not necessarily better source, give two different
production-date ranges (1971-1976 on p.670, 1971-1975 on p.673 and on p.1046)
rather than Gert-Jan's 1970-1977, and a very different production total
(32,288 rather than 37,459) as well as a different serial-number range for the
105.21 for 1971 (ending at 2427650 rather than 2426702). Their 32,288 total
includes the 105.22 (r/h drive) and 115.01 (USA) types as well as the basic
105.21.
I mention this not to differ with Gert-Jan; I have no more reason to believe
one set of numbers than another. But it may be useful to know that numbers
often differ, sometimes quite substantially, and that sometimes citing the
sources can help keep data and other facts (or "facts") in perspective.
Cordially,
