Mechanical fuel pump on ex-SPICA 1750

Here's another puzzle from the Alfa parts pile. I have a spare 1750 engine
from a US model car, which would have had SPICA injection originally, but
was converted to carbs by a previous owner. It's a serious conversion,
with a proper carb manifold and timing case. Question is, will a
mechanical fuel pump like the ones that came with Euro-market carbed cars
work with this motor? There's a place for the pump on the timing case
(currently blocked off), and the distributor gear on the oil pump shaft is
offset, so it looks like it would drive the fuel pump rod. Anyone know of
a reason why a mechanical pump wouldn't bolt up and go?

Thanks,
Dana
