Re: clear fuel hose

As Don Happel wrote "There is clear fuel hose used on pleasure
vessels (boats) as sight guages", however is not allowed on
commercial vessels - sight guages must be glass - the logic
being that in case of an engineroom fire the plastic would melt
causing a catastrophic addition of fuel to the fire.

However, on gas powered pleasure craft, there is a USCG mandated
clear gas line from the carburator to the fuel filter/pump,so
there is a marine safety standard for this stuff.Look in your
phone book ( here in NYC the blue pages in the white pages)
under Federal Agencies, Dept. of Transportation, US Coast Guard,
Marine Safety or Marine Inspection. They can tell you the
approved hoses, and if you are nice to them they can suggest
local suppliers.

These standards for parts used to be listed in CG 169, a book of
approved parts for commercial marine use, but since I have not
been doing any new building I have not have a reason to check
current issues. You can call your local USCG office of marine
inspection to have them (grungingly) give you the information. If
they are not having a high pressure day. They can be a wealth of
information when approached about safety issues, just phrase it
in terms of putting a ?? 305 street Chevy or an Alfa Romeo
conversion into a boat. Chevy usually gets beter response.
