More About Those Trucks...

constant talk about making SUV's less sturdy."

I think the trend may be going the other way; GMC will
soon come out with a much larger ofshoot of the
Suburban. It will be called the "Suburb," and instead
of a license plate it'll be assigned a Zip code...

"I'll put my wife and kids in the largest, heaviest,
safest vehicle I can get her to drive."

I'll quarrel with your equating large and heavy with
safe. If my girlfriend had been driving just about
anything but my Mini the day she came around a blind
corner in our industrial park and found herself facing
a rapidly oncoming semi tractor, she'd have been
squashed like a bug. Instead, she swerved and
braked...and when the two vehicles stopped, they were
beside each other. That was almost thirty years ago
(plus one son and a lot of memories), and I'm still
grateful for the sharp responses of that little car.

I couldn't get my wife to drive one of those
overpriced trucks if I wanted to; I'm not crazy
about'em, but she utterly loathes them. Her reflexes
and car-controlling abilities are at least as good as
mine, and she drives a Milano. I call that as safe a
combination as you can find.
